Join us for Spectacular Nature Day – a celebration of Burlington’s natural biodiversity in partnership with Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront, Burlington Wildways, Intervale Center, University of Vermont, City of Winooski, Winooski Valley Park District.

Date: Sunday, April 28, 2024

Time: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Location: Intervale Center, 180 Intervale Rd, Burlington, VT 05401

Activities will include:

  • Edible treats made from local invasive (but delicious) plants

  • Planting ostrich ferns to restore riparian forest areas by the Winooski river

  • Practicing sustainable foraging of non-native invasive species

  • Learning more about nature and climate action

Garden Like a Farmer: Seed Saving & Garlic Planting

Join us to learn about two end-of-season practices we are passionate about - saving seeds and planting garlic! We will reflect on the beauty and abundance of seeds as we learn tips and techniques for seed saving in a small-scale garden. Differentiating between dry and wet seeds, considering cross-pollination, threshing and winnowing, drying and storing seeds will all be explored through hands-on demonstrations.

Saving garlic seed and setting yourself up for success growing this beloved crop will also be part of this workshop. We will discuss types of garlic, fertility needs, spacing requirements and cultivation tips for planting garlic now and harvesting abundance next summer. In celebration of this last workshop in the Garden Like a Farmer series, we will have garlic seed and this season's surplus seed packets to share with participants.

Before we call it quits for the year there are a few more steps we could take to ensure our growing space continues to thrive. In this workshop we will go over some basic strategies for preparing your growing space for the winter months. Things that will be covered are cover cropping strategies, winter food production, and tips to get a jump start on the next growing season.

Intervale Cooking Series: Street Foods of the Middle East

Join our partners at City Market and instructor Anna Mays to celebrate the flavors of summer with Middle Eastern street food in this outdoor class at the Intervale. In this class, we will learn about street foods popular across the Middle East and the important socio-economic role these foods have historically played for vendors, consumers, and local food producers. Together, we will learn to make marinated beef kebabs and discuss their Turkish origins and popular marinades, acidifiers and spice variations from Lebanon to Oman. We will learn to make the Levantine flatbread Manakeesh with Akkawi, perfect for eating with dips and meat. Participants will also have a chance to roll their own stuffed grape leaves, using a vegetarian summer filling of rice, fresh herbs, pine nuts and black currants.

Class will be held outdoors, and attendees must wear close-toed shoes.

We’ll learn how to have a few easy summer standbys on hand that can be pulled together with a quick chop, soak, thaw or buzz in the blender—no heat needed.

Melissa has worked as a food and agriculture journalist and cookbook author for close to 20 years. She currently writes for the food section of Vermont’s alt-weekly, Seven Days. Prior to that, she was food editor for Vermont Life magazine and a regular contributor to the Burlington Free Press. She has authored or co-authored three cookbooks of which The Little Local Vermont Cookbook (W.W.Norton, 2020) is her latest.
